Our Approach
At Glassbox3D, our work is guided by the belief that cultural heritage is living. It exists not only in sites, structures, and artefacts, but in memory, practice, and lived experience. Our approach combines research-led methodologies, in-house fieldwork, and immersive technologies to ensure heritage is documented and interpreted with care, accuracy, and respect.
We conduct our own fieldwork in-house, working directly within heritage spaces and alongside the communities connected to them. This allows us to document sites, stories, and practices within their lived context rather than as abstracted data points. By being present in the field, we are able to engage with personal recollections, oral histories, and cultural knowledge that cannot be captured through remote or purely technical processes.
Rather than focusing solely on physical reconstruction, our work centres the people who lived the history we are documenting. We collaborate with individuals and communities to capture memory, narrative, and meaning alongside spatial environments. This approach allows heritage to be represented as lived-in and human, rather than as empty or detached spaces.
Glassbox3D specialises in capturing and documenting indigenous knowledge and cultural practices through immersive technologies such as VR and AR. By representing practices spatially and interactively, users are able to learn by doing — gaining insight into the cultural context, logic, and meaning embedded within these practices. This approach supports preservation while respecting the integrity and specificity of cultural knowledge.
We use technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, 360° video, and LiDAR capture to support heritage documentation and interpretation. Technology is never the starting point. It is chosen carefully based on the needs of each project, ensuring it enhances understanding rather than distracting from the heritage itself. This allows us to represent sites that no longer physically exist, have been altered, or are inaccessible — while maintaining historical integrity and context.
We work closely with institutions, researchers, and communities throughout each project. This collaborative approach ensures accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and alignment with institutional goals. Our responsibility extends beyond delivery. We consider how digital heritage outputs will be accessed, interpreted, and sustained over time.
Every heritage project carries responsibility. Our approach is designed to balance innovation with care, and technical capability with human understanding. If you are exploring ways to document, preserve, or interpret cultural heritage through immersive technologies, we would welcome a conversation.
