Preserving Living Heritage Through Immersive Spatial Technologies

We work with museums, cultural institutions, and researchers to preserve, interpret, and share cultural heritage through ethical fieldwork and immersive technologies such as VR, AR, and spatial documentation.

Why this matters

Heritage is more than places and objects

Digital archiving is often treated as the preservation of spaces, artefacts, and structures. While essential, this approach can overlook the people, memories, and lived experiences that give heritage its meaning. At Glassbox3D, we believe that cultural heritage is living. It is shaped by the communities who experienced it, the stories they carry, and the knowledge passed between generations. Our work begins there.

What makes Glassbox3D different?

A memory-led approach to digital heritage

Rather than recreating empty spaces, we work directly with people who lived the history we are documenting. Through fieldwork, collaboration, and research-led methodologies, we capture personal recollections, indigenous knowledge, and cultural context alongside physical environments. Immersive technologies become tools — not the focus — allowing history to be experienced as lived-in, human, and meaningful.

We don’t just document heritage — we work with the people who lived it.

What we do

We collaborate with cultural institutions and research bodies across a range of heritage-focused applications.

Cultural Heritage Documentation

Preserving sites, spaces, and histories through immersive spatial capture, fieldwork, and research-led methodologies.

Immersive Interpretation & Exhibitions

Creating VR and AR experiences that allow audiences to engage with heritage in accessible, meaningful, and educational ways.

Spatial Archiving & Reconstruction

Using technologies such as 360° video and LiDAR capture to document sites that are inaccessible, altered, or no longer physically present.

Indigenous Knowledge & Practice Documentation

Working with communities to preserve cultural practices and knowledge through immersive, learn-by-doing digital experiences.

Research-led, Fieldwork-driven

Glassbox3D is led by Dr Izak Potgieter, a PhD graduate specialising in the intersection of cultural heritage and immersive technologies. Our work is grounded in in-house fieldwork, academic research, and ethical collaboration with communities and institutions. This ensures every project balances technical innovation with cultural responsibility.

Who we work with

We collaborate with organisations entrusted with preserving, interpreting, and sharing cultural heritage, including: - Museums and galleries - Cultural and heritage institutions - Universities and research bodies - Cultural NGOs and heritage councils If your work involves safeguarding history for future generations, we’d welcome a conversation.

Let's Talk

Every heritage project is unique. Whether you’re exploring digital archiving, immersive interpretation, or new ways of engaging audiences, we’d be glad to discuss how Glassbox3D could support your work.
